The Monadic Sheep
“Programs must be written for people to read, and only incidentally for machines to execute.”
Abelson & Sussman, Structure & Interpretation of Computer Programs (1996)
We are Monadic Sheep. Software is art, and it being free/libre is a bare minimum requirement for that. As above so below.
We are are ardent supporters of the Free/Libre Software Movement. We share the love of the four freedoms, as well as an implied respect for the user. Consequently, we write programs primarily with the intention of them being readable and user-modifiable. We do so in more than just the letter of the law (the licence), but as a guiding philosophical principle of the design.
Programming is a rewarding activity in and of itself, an artistic expression of a very particular kind, requiring a great deal of human insight and precision. As such, we ban LLM-assisted contributions.
Our interests reach far beyond programming. We are enthusiastic about a good philosophical debate, and if you want to be involved in that, no coding required, feel free to join us on our XMPP channel at forthcoming-monadic-sheep@conference.dialetheia.xyz.
